Your Questions About Google Chrome

James asks…

How do I disable Google Chrome from saving my searches in the address bar?

When I use the address bar to search for things, it saves all the searches within there. No matter how much history I delete, it still appears? How do I disable this setting and clear all Google search history in Chrome?

Natalia Popovici answers:

When chrome window is open press ctrl+shift+delete then set “Obliterate the following items from” to the beginning of time and tick whatever you want to delete then click clear browsing data :)
If you don’t want chrome to save tour searches then just use incognito window.

Mandy asks…

How do I get google chrome on to a flash drive and on to a different computer?

I can’t access internet explorer, on my laptop and I am trying to download google chrome from my pc to my flash drive to my laptop. I have a dell windows 7 laptop if that helps. Verizon fios wi-fi too.
internet explorer is the only browser i have, so i can’t download it on my laptop.

Natalia Popovici answers:

You go to the start button (In the bottom left corner) and click “Computer”. Then you go to “NAME(C:)”
Go into “Program Files” (Or Program Files (x86)) and find the folder. Its either Google or Google Chrome. Then copy that to your flashdrive. There should be a file in the folder called google chrome.exe or something. It ends with .exe, that is google chrome.

Laura asks…

How do you get Google Chrome to remember what you have typed but without the auto complete option?

Hi

I would like Google Chrome to remember what I have typed so that I can select each fields individually but not have the auto complete option. Is this possible? Thanks

Natalia Popovici answers:

No it’s not possible – if autocomplete is off chrome will not be able to autocomplete anything, so it doesn’t remember anything because you’ve told it not to by turning autocomplete off

How do I transfer my bookmarks from google chrome to another computer?

Hi, I would like to know how I would go about transferring the bookmarks at my Google chrome browser, to another computer,( Where I also use Google chrome). I am really confused. Please do help me. If could please lay out a step by step guide, as I am not very astute at these matters. Thank you :-)

Natalia Popovici answers:

Go to the “wrench menu” in chrome and select “set up sync”
log in into your google account (you need agoogle account for this) and that’s really all you need to do, because with this your bookmarks, browser themes and settings will be transferred to your google account.
If you want to use the settings transferred to your google account just do the set up sync again on each computer you’re using

here they explain it with more details

Your Questions About Google Earth

Jenny asks…

How does google earth have photos from space from the 40s?

In google earth 5.0 you can see areas in the 40s but how did they get those images if the first satellite didn’t launch until 1957 and the first time a satellite to took photos of earth, from space, was in 1959.

Natalia Popovici answers:

Many of the Historical photos are actually Aerial Photos and not Satellite images. You are correct in your questioning how they could have been satellite images from before satellites took photos from space.

Donna asks…

How can you download Google Earth Live 2012 for free to windows XP?

David asks…

What are your favorite places to view on google earth?

What are your favorite places to view on google earth? I like to look at ships at naval bases, and I’ve seen Niagra Falls and the Himalya Mnts. If you have exact addresses to anything that is even fairly unknown that is cool. I just want some neat stuff to check out. If you are into astronomy, as I am, you can also mention something in the “sky” portion of Google Earth.

Natalia Popovici answers:

I’ve checked out the Great Wall of China, Paris, the Vatican, the Colosseum in Rome, the pyramids in Egypt, Boston MA (my hometown) the Golden Gate bridge in SF, the Hollywood sign, the Big Island of Hawaii, Easter Island and the Grand Canyon. FUN stuff that Google Earth!

Carol asks…

How often does Google Earth update it’s photographs of the globe?

I’ve noticed that photos of the same locations change over time but since I hardly use Google, and only use Google Earth periodically, I’m curious as to how often the photos are updated: Is it monthly, bi-monthly, every 6-months, a year even? Does anyone really know for sure?

Natalia Popovici answers:

Not often enough LOL – they definitely need to do it more often!

Michael asks…

How does google earth/maps get pictures of so many places on street level?

I like checking out google earth and maps from time to time and find it interesting, but I wonder how do they get so many pictures of so many places on street level etc?

Natalia Popovici answers:

They have a car with cameras mounted on top that produce images that when spliced together form 360 degree views of the street or highway they are driving on. They have been doing this for a couple years now. I believe the project is incomplete at this time. I agree it’s very interesting, you can visit many cities and towns in many parts of the country and some outlying areas too. It’s also helpful when planning a trip even just across town, to know where to turn and exit, to see and recognize physical landmarks, etc.

Your Questions About Google Docs

Thomas asks…

How do you insert voice recordings in a google docs presentation?

We’re doing a project using google docs ? Were making a PowerPoint on google docs and i don’t know how to insert my voice recordings… It’s due tomorrow so I need to do it now..

Natalia Popovici answers:

Answer: The short answer is no. Right now, Google Presentations do not support importing audio. Also, PowerPoint files added to Google Presentations will be torn to shreds…no graphics, animations, transitions, audio, templates, etc…all gone. So moving your PowerPoint files into Google Docs for storage is one thing, converting them to Google presentations is another, and is not recommended for any reason, sorry

Ruth asks…

Is there way to download google docs and save on computer?

These are not my own google docs.
There is a fanfiction novel I’ve read online that I would really like to have on my computer in case anything happens and the links no longer work. Is there a way to download the doc files to either pdf or doc files and save them on my computer from the links?

Natalia Popovici answers:

Yes there is! I have had to make PDFs from web pages before. The problem is that it PDFs the entire page. You will need Firefox and a plug in called “PDF It”. To get them just use Google. There are tons of plug ins available out there. You can start with my recommendations and then go from there until you find one that works for you.

Firefox
Plugin: PDF It https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/pdfit/

The use is simple. Just go to the desired page, click Tools from the Top toolbar, and select the plug in. Then it gives you the option to download the entire page or visible area. In my experiences, sometimes it doesn’t work, but all you have to do is keep trying it until you get the desired effect.

Your Questions About Google Maps

Jenny asks…

How can i load maps to google maps on my Nokia 5530?

I have a Nokia 5530 Xpress Music, but no contract. Whenever I open Google Maps it always goes online, and here in Malta that costs a lot of credit. Can I load a map offline, or maybe can stop Google Maps going online?

Natalia Popovici answers:

Google Maps does not allow you to store Maps offline, you cannot use the application in offline mode.
If you want offline maps, check at www.nokia.com/maps to see if there is a version of Nokia Maps application available for your phone. That will run offline as well and you can use your computer to store offline maps on to your phone.

Mark asks…

Google maps how to calculate lat long from point A to B?

I have been looking to navigate with google maps from point A to B.
So I have the latitude and longitude of point A & B and I want to be able to see after 10 minutes where I will be. I take travel time of a plane like 1000km/hour.

I can calculate the distance from point A to B.
But how can I find out the coordinates of latitude and longitude after the 10 minutes.
Is it possible to calculate it with the slope?
I know when I augment longitude + 1 it is equal to 96km which result in +-6 minutes of travel distance.
So I advance every 6 minutes my longitude + 1 and I calculate with the slope the latitude. I don’t know if this is right?

Is it possible to augment my longitude with 1 and to stay on the line?

Natalia Popovici answers:

Slopes will not work. Generally, you will not be changing latitude (or longitude) at a constant rate.

The shortest distance from A to B will be a great circle. You say you figured the distance A to B, and you want the point that is X distance from A, along the line to B. Here is a link to some formulas that will help.

Use the first set of formulas to find the A-B distance and the initial bearing. Then use the second set, using the initial bearing and the A-X distance, to find the point for X. These formulas should be accurate to a kilometer or so.

Lisa asks…

How to implement google maps on web application?

For example:

1. We can add our favorite places on google maps and highlight it.
2. We can edit everything we add on it.
3. Delete also.

It concerns our web programming project, any help would greatly appreciated!

Natalia Popovici answers:

For hard core projects that need dynamically added content the Maps API would be used:

My Maps lets you manually create a custom map, check the video

Joseph asks…

How can I create a customizable map in Google Maps or other online mapping software?

I would like to be able to change the size of the location marker based on the number of times that an incident occurs at a given location. Is this possible within Google Maps? If not are there other resources available to accomplish this task? The parameters I am specifically looking for are no cost, no download, online services that can be shared to a select group of persons.

Natalia Popovici answers:

Google allows users to create KML (sort of like XML) that can be overlayed against the base Google Maps they provide. Duncan’s link is a good place to start. You should be able to find plenty of examples (most newspapers include police incident reports as a map overlayed against Google base maps) online.

Your Questions About Google Images

Lisa asks…

How to view google images on tablet like the iPad photo app?

The other day I was looking on google images with my iPad, and I turned it into portrait mode, and I was able to swipe through the images like the iPad photo app. I can’t do that now. Please help!

Natalia Popovici answers:

Occationally, a website update or a glitch in the iPad may prevent the page or images from loading properly. Don’t panic. It’s a simple fix.

If it’s the iPad:
– Just hold down the black power off button and shut the iPad down for a few minutes. We to often forget that these devices are computers too and need the occational reboot. After a while, turn it back on and go back to the site. It should be back to normal. If not, go down to the next step listed below.

If it’s the website:
– Just give it a day. Some things just have glitches and it takes a while to get them all out. It should work. If it doesn’t resolve within a day, contact your local consultant at an Apple store for further help.

Easy 10 points for best answer.

Charles asks…

Who else is bothered by people suggesting Google Translate on the Languages section?

Google Translate doesn’t work and they’re just making it harder for people asking the questions.

Natalia Popovici answers:

It is a nuisance. Why bother to post something that people are already aware of and that is unreliable?

Michael asks…

Why is it that google translate is so terrible?

I’ve been teaching myself German and learned through trial and error that most online translators are not to be trusted; but I’ve run into the most trouble with google translate.
It doesn’t seem to register the right wording order with most languages, and when I go to check myself I’ve got nothing to do but wait for my Austrian friend to come online to correct me.
Why is it that google translate doesn’t know how to order words properly in separate languages?
And are there any online translators that do?

Natalia Popovici answers:

When people use a calculator to work out the answer to a mathematics problem, they will get one, correct answer if they have keyed in all the digits and operators correctly. They then go to an online translator and expect to be able to do the same with a piece of text. Mathematics has its own logic and rules that can be recreated with a calculator. Language doesn’t. Languages are constantly changing anyway through usage and sentence grammar and syntax vary widely from language to language. The online translator is only as good as the algorithms it deploys when rendering meaning from one language to another. And this is one area in which a machine still can’t compete with an appropriately trained human translator.

The best human translators are often those brought up bilingually, by say, a German-speaking father and an English-speaking mother. To be a good translator, you have to know two languages to a native level. In many Yahoo questions, non-bilingual German speakers sometimes post answers translating German text into English, putting “native” (native what?) as their source. Their knowledge of German may be impeccable, but their English will sometimes sound stilted and unidiomatic even if, technically, the grammar is accurate. If you’re not bilingual, then it’s best to stick to translating into your mother tongue because you know that language best. The United Nations Organisation tends to employ only completely bilingual linguists, which of course is an accident of birth.

Getting back to online translators, they do have their uses. Use them to translate text from a foreign language into English and read through what they produce with a critical eye. If you enter a whole text and end up with gibberish, enter a sentence or two of the text instead and see what happens. If you’re still unsatisfied, then enter the text one word at a time. You’ll get the gist of the meaning that way, but to get a wholly reliable translation, you’ll need to approach a professional translator. If you must translate from your mother tongue into a foreign language, you must always re-enter the foreign language text into the online translator and get it to translate back into your mother tongue. Then judge whether the translator has done a good job.

Finally, the best help to the linguist isn’t Google Translate but Google itself. If you want to check the grammatical accuracy of a piece of foreign language text, do an online search and see if the phrase comes up on a website in the country where the foreign language is spoken. If you do find it there, check what kind of website it is, whether a teenage, slang-oriented site or an academic site where people use formal language.

Sandra asks…

How can I put hard copies of pages from a book into Google Translate or Babelfish?

These came via U S mail. I can’t find a way to cut, copy and paste any of it into Google translate or any other translation service, so I can read it in English. How else can I do this?
I will allow for differences in sentence structure and the meaning of some words. I just want the gist of what the pages are saying.

Natalia Popovici answers:

Aside from typing them up yourself, there is no way.
But you’ll get more than just sentence structure and word differences. You’re going to get complete and utter rubbish vomited forth.

Sandra asks…

What are the similarities and differences between a google search for information and a google scholar search?

Natalia Popovici answers:

The main difference is, if ur a student, you can get legit documents to reference in order to avoid plagiarism where u can easily find on google search.

The similarities are they are both good for normal search, but the difference is, the search capabilities and algorithms used for scholar search is slightly different and they give more intensive variables for schools and university related works.

On google scholar is there a way to make a file a PDF?

I know in certain places you can buy a pdf, But in some places there are books that are available for preview, can those turned into pdf, or any other advice on how to view material off that database??

Natalia Popovici answers:

If the file is able to be printed, it can be converted to a PDF.

1. Go to http://www.dopdf.com/download.php . This is a safe and easy download and installs in a snap.
2. Download and install doPDF. This creates a virtual printer that, instead of physically printing your file, it just converts it into a PDF and saves it in the location of your choice. I would not make it the default printer unless you have none.
3. Go to the file and print it. If you are open to the file and you see no option to print, CTRL and P held at the same time should print up the print window. Make sure that the printer doPDF is selected, and hit print.
4. In the window that should then pop up, select quality, name and location of the file, and then doPDF should do the rest.

How I get snaps shorts from google earth to get a map for a specific area?

I want to make a map and print that for a specific area in high resolution from google earth. But my problem is that I can’t joined the snaps properly in Photoshop for getting the wright map for a specific area. Is there any software for taking the snap shorts from google earth and joined them all to generate the right map for that area in high resoulution.

Natalia Popovici answers:

Sorry, but there is no software to take a snapshot from google earth, but you can do so by other way.

1) you can print screen the page by pressing the print screen button of your keyboard ,

2) then paste it in mspaint and cut out the map and paste in other paint.

3)then slide the map in google earth and again repeate the 1st step.

4) after that paste that map in other paint i which you had pasted earlier after cutting.

5) and slide that to join both maps to a single in paint.

By this way you can create a whole map.

Ya, it will take some time but by this way you can get your whole map clear.

Google Earth Question – How do you transfer placemarks saved on one computer to another?

I have a laptop and a new computer. I used to use google earth on my laptop first and I would like to transfer the placemarks on my laptop onto my new computer. How do you do this?

Natalia Popovici answers:

In the Places window, right-click on My Places and choose to Save As… You have the option to save the placemarks to a file which you can then send to the other computer.

On the other computer, click on File/Open and open the file you created earlier. In this way you have migrated your placemarks from one computer to another.

Donald asks…

How often does Google Earth update their pictures, and why are the graphics still just as bad?

I got Google Earth years ago, and then I recently got 5.0, but they are like exactly the same. Why does Google Earth even make new ones if they aren’t going to update the pictures or make so you can zoom in closer?

Natalia Popovici answers:

Hey, hey, don’t be so hard on them!
Google is one of the biggest search engines worldwide, and they have just launched their own internet browsing service, Google Chrome. And, also having Gmail and iGoogle, they seem like very busy people, and with hungry computers awaiting to feed in the updation software to all of you. Yet you want to complain??! Well, I`m sorry, but that is very un-grateful.
Updating a software, (in this case, Google Earth) is not as easy as you may think it is, you don’t suddenly notice all of the changes, and it does give you a full view of the earth, lets you search it, see your home/others houses complete with all of your garden items, such as a pond/shed. Often, updating something makes it faster, smoother to run, and easier to understand. Only when the company feel they have all this on their previous version, will they start working on how it looks, and extra features.
What I’m saying is, with Google worrying about updating their internet, browser, iGoogle, Gmail, etc., they don’t have a lot of time on their hands to meet your requirements straight away.
I think Google Earth is pretty clever and neat, so what if it isn’t perfect graphics? Do you really need those to find a location?
Google Earth was not designed for people to locate a house or school, hotel, anything they like, and compare the distances.
It is NOT meant to have 100% perfect graphics, you can see perfectly from the maximum zooming in tool, and spin around. If you don’t appreciate it, try finding a Yahoo! Version of it.

Oh, wait.
There isn’t one.
It is Google’s special feature, please appreciate that.

Mary asks…

How can I submit my business to google maps when my business is a service for people in their homes?

Usually when I search for a type of business google has many names and addresses of the businesses immediately and it’s included on google maps. But if my business consists of services primarily provided in a customer’s home (and I don’t have an office yet) can it still be listed? Without an address?

Natalia Popovici answers:

There’s a new feature in Google Places for businesses that allows you to list a “service area.” When you do this you can also exclude your address.

Not showing your address seems to lead to lower rankings, so I would definitely add it if you get an office sometime down the line, but this will at least get you listed for now.

How can I collate a land map with Google Maps satellite view?

I’m considering investing in a tract of property, and the boundaries and borders of this property are displayed on the land companies website. It is shaded and graphed out well, but the over-all map leaves a lot to the imagination. It doesn’t show neighboring property or anything.

Is there any way that I can collate the shaded part of the land map I’m considering investing in, with Google Maps satellite view? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Natalia Popovici answers:

I did this once, by stitching screen captures of google maps section in a photo editing program like Photoshop. When you have the google map area displayed on screen, hold down the key ALT and press key “Print Screen”, this will copy the content of your screen into a memory buffer. In your photo editing program, make a new blank photo file then press Ctrl-V or “File -> Paste” in the menu, and your “screenshot” will be pasted into the the new file. Make sure your new blank file resolution matches your screen resolution. To stitch other screenshot into the same file, you will have to resize the resolution of your file to double the original file, or make that file at the required resolution in the first place.

For example: if you have your screen resolution at 1024×786, make your blank file at 1024×1572 if you want to stitch two screen shots vertically, and 2048×786 if you do it side by side. After that you would want to clean up the image by cropping out unwanted areas, flatting it in case of Photoshop and save it in JPEG format to save disk space.
